Hello there bloggies!
We’re about two rounds through the US Open, and pretty much most of my “bold” predictions are falling to pieces. You can check out my awful predictions here and here. My rooting hard for you or pointing out that you have even a chance to do well is almost the touch of death.
-The first victim of my prediction curse was good ol’ Jo Konta. I thought she’d be able to take advantage of Halep/Sharapova fatigue and make the semis. Jo is solid in Slams and make her big break at the US Open a couple years ago. Big serve, solid groundies. All good? NO GOOD. The curse of Dr. F could not allow that. First round loss. You gone Jo!
-Point out that Caroline Wozniacki LOVES playing the US Open and has made two finals there. Hell, match her up against a player she is 7-0 against. Even get into a scratchy dog-fight of a match that you always pull through in. Doesn’t matter. You gone Woz!
-Discuss how there is literally NO ONE in the bottom half of the men’s draw other than Cilic who hasn’t played since Wimbledon and some tall/big servers. What a perfect place for A. Zverev to be to make his first big splash in a Slam! I loved his draw SO MUCH that I chose him to win the championship. All he had to do was ride the wave of momentum he built up in DC and Montreal. He rode a wave alright. A wave heading all the way back to Germany! You gone Sascha!
-Mentioning that bottom half of nothingness, I thought I was so clever thinking that David Ferrer was going to make some noise. He has made a career of taking advantage of tournaments when the big players aren’t there or up to snuff. Ferrer was shaping into form, playing really really well in Cincinnati. Nope. None of that mattered. First round loss for Mr. Ferrer. You gone David!
-Who was on a bigger role than the little beast Ferrer? The guy who beat him in Cincy and made the finals there: Nick Krygios. Krygios is so so fun to watch and seems to be in a good place. Predicting him to do well was made completely with my heart. Well, my heart burned Nick. No way he could make a run. You gone Aussie Nick!
-Another somewhat sleeper pick was the youngster CiCI Bellis. She’s had a really great year on tour, beaten some real good players, and LOVES a big stage. Being unranked, she usually draws a big name early on. But not here! She had another unranked player. Totally winnable! But of course, I had written her name. No way she could win as she fell in 3 tight sets. You gone Catherine!
-Now, this last prediction cursed player is still in the tournament. Sir Roger. I predicted he would beat Rafa in the semis and make the finals. He actually just survived his 2nd straight 5 set match, but boy is Roger making it difficult for everyone. WHY IS HE GETTING PUSHED TO FIVE ALREADY. And against Tiafoe and Youzhny? WTF bruh? And now he has the way too beautiful Feli Lopez. You still here GOAT! For now…
This tournament has been bananas and clearly proved to me that I have no business making grand predictions. I can talk about who is playing well and how players match up. But that’s where I stop.
I do have to say I love the topsy turvy nature of this tourney. Anyone could beat anyone. It’s fun, exciting, and requires many multitasking skills while trying to work the day job….sorry boss. Can’t wait to see what happens in these mid rounds!!

Until next time!
