Hello there bloggies!
Get excited y’all…tomorrow is the US Open! We just previewed the women’s tournament. Now let’s take a gander at the men’s.
The breaking news is that defending champion and number two ranked Andy Murray is out of the open. He joins Djokovic, Wawrinka, Raonic, and Nishikori on the sidelines. Not only does his withdrawal mean that we won’t get to watch him complete, but it leaves the draw completely top-heavy with Rafa and Federer falling there.
Let’s take a closer look at the draw:
Honestly, Nadal’s draw is looking pretty clear. The other top seed Grigor Dimitrov had an impressive title run in Cincinnati. But should Grigor and Rafa meet in the quarterfinals, I just don’t see Dimitrov matching up well in best 3 out of 5 unless he catches absolute fire. There are some big matching playing giant slayers here: Monfils, Gasquet, and Fognini. But don’t see anyone that can stop Nadal here.
Easily this quarter is the toughest and it is not even close. Roger is the big name here. His season has been phenomenal, but he did fall in the Canada finals and pulled out of Cincinnati. But beating Roger has been a feat this year.
The threats in this quarter are real and numerous. The most intriguing and headline grabbing is Nick Krygios. Krygios is peaking right now, reaching the Cincy finals beating Nadal on the way. And boy did he look sooooo impressive in Cincy. Though can he bring it consistently and in New York. We also have former US Open champ Juan Martin del Potro. Not sure if he can linger here. Throw in big hitting Verdasco and Winston-Salem champ Bautista-Agut. Oh and I’m not even mentioning Dominic Thiem. Damn is this quarter loaded.
And that makes picking a winner ridiculous. I’m soooo tempted to predict chaos and Roberto Bautista-Agut (did you see his tweeners this past week?!?). But I can’t go against the GOAT.
The serve is the dominant shot in this quarter. Isner, both Zverev’s, Kevin Anderson, and Sam Querrey. Cue the tiebreaks!! But the major story here is Sascha Zverev. The 20 year old has won two hardcourt tournaments this summer and catapulted into the top ten. He is doing it at the top non-Slam tournaments now. But can he translate that into a 2 week/best of five set Slam? That’s the big question now-a-days. Also, I’m secretly hoping for a Zverev brother showdown.
Semifinalist: A. Zverev
Welcome to the part of the draw where Andy Murray’s withdrawal really throws a wrench into things. Marin Cilic now fills Murray’s spot. In case you forgot as I did, Cilic did make the Wimbledon Finals and has won this tournament before when the draw broke open. But honestly, who will win this quarter. WHO THE F KNOWS?!?
Ferrer is here and has played well this summer. Tsonga is here too and has made a Slam final. But when a draw opens up, I always got to go with Cilic.
Semis: Federer def Nadal & Zverev def Cilic
Finals: Zverev def Federer
I’m thinking that the fans will get the Fed vs. Rafa showdown everyone wants. But I just don’t think Federer will be getting this US Open title. I don’t know why, but I can’t shake that feeling. So I’m going with Zverev to make the big jump to Slam champ and bringing the Next Gen into the Now Gen.
