Hello there bloggies!
The French Open starts tomorrow, and the women’s tournament is going to be crazy in the best way. It is the very reason why I love the WTA so much. Anyone can gut their way to a win any day, and anyone can win this championship.
So with that in mind, here is a preview and my horrible horrible predictions.
The tennis gods are conspiring against the number one seeded Kerber because this quarter is freaking loaded man. And that is especially worrying to a Kerber lacking confidence on her worst surface. Kerber opens up against Makarova (!) in what may be a pick-em match. Her 3rd round match could end up being the winner of dangerous Ostapenko vs. gold medalist Puig. Incredibly hard to see Kerber navigating these match-ups.
And we haven’t even mentioned the other slam winners, finalists, and French Open semi-finalists here. Former slam winners Stosur and Kuznetsova are both playing well this year, and both love playing on the red clay in Paris. Surprise French semi-finalist last year and two-twin Nurnberg champ Bertens is starting to pick up steam, and the ever-opportunistic Wozniacki is sitting in a nice cushion of the draw.
This quarter is going to be fun, guys. Buckle up. I think it’s a Stosur vs. Bertens for the semi-final, and I can’t believe I’m picking who I’m picking.
Defending champ Muguruza is in the second quarter and of course is opening against former (and about to be retired) champ Schiavone. I think Garby gets through that match, but I’m expecting some fun there. This section is littered with shot-makers. Lucic-Baroni, Venus Williams, and Kiki Mladenovic have continued their good form from the hard courts. It’s hard to see Venus grind her way through this tournament for two weeks, but Kiki and Lucic-Baroni have been so impressive. Seeing Kiki gain control of her mental game has been more than impressive, and I’m hoping she gives the home crowd something to cheer for.
Now here is what should be the mother of all quarters. The two best players of the clay court season, Halep and Svitolina, headline this section. What a perfect quarterfinals matchup! And then Halep had to injured her ankle 😦 I AM SO UPSET. Other than a Carla Suarez-Navarro upping her form or nerves taking over, I can’t see anyone knocking Svitolina off here.
This is the quarter of really quality players who maybe sort of don’t like clay so much. It’s hard to find players who were playing better to start the season than Pliskova and Konta. But their games just don’t translate the best to clay. Toss in a Vandeweghe and Aga, and we are going to have a player in the semis who may not expect it. I do have mention two things before making my pick: 1) Lauren Davis is seeded! 2) Lucie Safarova, a former finalist, is here though has not rediscovered her form.
Mladenovic def Stosur: It’s just too difficult to pick Stosur here. Too much game and variety from Kiki, plus a little push from the French crowd.
Svitolina def Pliskova: Svitolina will get too many balls back and exploit Pliskova’s movement.
Svitolina def Mladenovic: Svitolina has worked methodically the past few years to this point. She has won tournaments and beaten really good players. I think she’s the one to take the trophy!
So those are my wacky predictions for this year’s tourney. What do you think? Let me know in the comments or on twitter (@DrFsThoughts)!
Enjoy the tennis!!
