Hello there bloggies!

Breaking news: I’m a massive nerd.

Though if you hadn’t gotten that from being a PhD research scientist and random posts on here, then we need to work on your skills or perception.

But to add to the ever-growing list of things that make me a massive nerd, I have recently become hopelessly but excitedly addicted to the podcast Stuff You Missed in History ClassStuff You Missed in History Class is a podcast from HowStuffWorks.com and is currently hosted by the fantastic Tracy V. Wilson & Holly Frey.

Tracy and Holly post ~30-40 minute episodes twice a week that explore a different historical topic, event, or figure. But they don’t just cover the typical topics that you see how history-based programs. Stuff You Missed in History Class dives into some of the less well-known moments in history that should not be forgotten and stories that should continued to be told.

Not only that but Tracy and Holly do a fantastic job in bringing humor and context to each topic. They are not afraid to tackle difficult, unsavory, or controversial topics. I’m also so happy that they are dedicated to discussing topics that aren’t usually on my radar. This show has exposed me to history I would have never been aware of. It’s been truly fascinating to listen to as I toil away in my genetic analyses.

Here are some of my favorites that I’ve listened to recently:

The Cod Wars: A fishing dispute between Iceland and the UK with many moments of hilarity but had a lasting effect on fishing towns and fish populations

Beyard Rustin: A major figure in Civil Rights and LBGTQ History, who I had no idea even existed until this podcast

Fridtjof Nansen and the Fram: A Norwegian explorer of the Arctic and a pivotal figure in the early years of Norway’s nationhood. I had recently gone to the Fram museum in Oslo, so it was great to dive even deeper into this man’s eventful life.

Christina of Sweden & King Eric XIV: I’m sorry I love stories about royals who may be a little different (Christina) or who may have suffered a touch of paranoia.

The Honey War: My favorite so far! A random border dispute between the states of Missouri and Iowa that all started because a surveyor couldn’t use a compass. And it just gets funnier from them. Pure amazingness.

I’m currently working my way through the archives and am loving learning so much about the world we live in. Thank you Holly and Tracy!! Huge fan of the podcast and of you! Feel free to let me know if you ever need any science info hehe.
