Hello there bloggies!
Just about 9 years ago, I was in the middle of my study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was easily one of the most exciting times in my life. All over the newspapers and TV at that time was a certain Danish tennis player who was starting to make her massive push into the elites of women’s tennis.
That player would be Caroline Wozniacki.
The Danish press followed her every move with a special focus on who she was dating (that hasn’t changed much…). But that didn’t matter to me. What I saw in front of me was a young, up-and-coming tennis player who was Danish. SOLD! It was there in Denmark that I started to be a Woz fan.
And to be honest, she made it easy. Caro is a dogged competitor who fights for every ball and every match. Sure she didn’t have the biggest weapons (though when she’s confident with that backhand…watch out), but Caroline wanted to be out on the court and win every match she played. Add that to her positive, outgoing persona.
How could you not get behind Wozniacki?
And I’ve continued to root for Caroline over the years. From the good times–two US Open finals, number one in the world, all the tour finals–to the rough times–first round losses, the carousel of coaches. I still pulled for Caro and honestly for Denmark.
And I will continue too. One of the fun parts about tennis is rooting for the individual. You’re not loyal to a team unit, but more to the person’s playing style and personality. You get to watch their tennis journey through the years and see how they overcome the obstacles that come their way.
So come on Caro!! She’s playing in the semis in Dubai today. I still have hope she’ll find a way to another Slam final. It’s tennis…anything can happen 🙂
Thanks for stopping by! Which tennis players have you stuck with through thick and thin? Let me know in the comments below or on twitter @DrFsThoughts.
