Hello there bloggies!

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve made it. Two crazy weeks of upsets, intrigue, inspiration, temper tantrums, tears, and triumph have come and gone. And now it is time to crown a champion.

Let’s dive into this absolutely brilliant matchup:

Venus Williams vs. Serena Williams

Yes, you read that right folks. And no we haven’t time-travelled back to the mid-2000s. We have a matchup between the Williams sister in a Slam final. The first one since the 2009 Wimbledon final when Serena won 7-6 6-2.

Now, we all expect to see Serena in the finals of Slam tournaments. She’s the best of all time and trying to break all of the records in tennis history. But Venus? No way. There was no way she could maintain a high level of tennis and handle the physical strain of winning 6 matches in a row. Especially in the hot Aussie summer sun. No way.

But maybe we should have? Venus made the semis of Wimbledon last year, losing to Kerber. And then she held match point over Pliskova in the US Open before Pliskova made it to the finals. Add that to Venus reaching the top 10 again last year, and this champ was primed for another run.

Right now, Serena leads the head-to-head 16-11, with Serena winning 7 out of the last 8. The matches between the Williams sisters can always be a bit awkward, and understandably so. They are incredibly close and have both overcome a wide range of obstacles in their lives. Both of them want the best for each other.

Now, let’s get to the tennis.

These two know each other’s games inside and out. But tennis-wise, the edge has to go to Serena. Forehand and backhand go to Serena. The serve as well, especially the second serve. Venus’s second serve can go off the rails and is attackable. Movement is a wash, and the volleys are a slight edge to Venus.

So you would think that this match will be tight but end up going to Serena. But there is one thing you just can’t measure. And it’s captured in this video from the the Australian Open twitter page.

Just look at that reaction from Venus winning! She wants it so so so bad. I can’t go against her story and her passion.

My pick: Venus in 3 sets.

That’s right I’m officially on crazy pills and picking against Serena. There’s just something about Venus right now. And I am all for it.

I’m also so for this matchup in the finals. Back in early/mid 2000s when they met in so many Slam finals, I used to dread this matchup. I didn’t appreciate the insanity of two sisters playing for Slam finals (plus the tennis wouldn’t be great). But now time has passed (and they play much better against each other now), and I am so excited to watch this match.

Thank you Venus and thank you Serena!

That’s my take on the women’s final. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below or on twitter @DrFsThoughts.
