Hello there bloggies!
Welcome to the Aussie Open Quarterfinals!
This tournament has brought it’s share of upsets and story lines. But we are now in the business end of the tournament. Who are the real contenders?
Let’s take a look at first quarterfinal matches:
Vandeweghe vs. Muguruza
Power, power, and more power. That’s all you need to know about this match. These ladies hit the crap out of the ball and know how to make shots. CoCo has swag and showed her mental resolve winning that match over Kerber. But she has never progressed into the semis of a slam before. CoCo leads the head-to-head 2-1, with both her wins coming on grass. Muguruza’s lone win came last year on the US hard courts in Cincinnati. I think we go three sets, but Garbine’s experience in the later stages of slams will pull her through.
Pavlyuchenkova vs. Venus Williams
Two more ladies who can hit the crap out of the ball. Both ladies have been impressive this tournament. Venus has been dominant over her opponents, while Pavs (sorry I ain’t spelling that name again) has really impressive wins over Kuznetsova and Svitolina. Venus has the slight lead in their head-to-head 3-2, but they haven’t played in a few years. If Venus keeps her feet moving, I see her winning. And fingers crossed so hard for it.
Federer vs. Zverev
The draw couldn’t have worked out better for Roger here. Meeting Andy Murray in Australian in the quarters would have been rough, but now he’s the favorite over Mischa Zverev. Zverev was ridiculous in taking out Andy, but no I don’t see it continuing. It all comes down to Roger’s serve. If the serve is working, he doesn’t have to work as hard holding his serve and his confidence grows. Seeing Roger win in 4 sets.
Wawrinka vs. Tsonga
Yes! Yes! Now, this is today’s winner of a match. And crazily enough the winner of this match may be the favorite to make the finals. Stan leads the head-to-head 4-3, notably taking Tsonga out in 4 in the 2015 French Open semis. I don’t know why, but I’m leaning toward Tsonga taking this match for some reason. I have no reasons for that. It might be Stan’s loss to Berdych in Doha. But I’m going with the Frenchman here. But get the highlight reel ready…these gentlemen can make any and every kind of shot!
