Hello there bloggies!
Somehow, we are almost done with the first week of the Australian Open. The field is whittling down, and we will soon have 16 players left in both the men’s and women’s singles draw. Let’s take a look at Day 6’s lineup.
Wozniacki vs. Konta
Whoa man, this man be the match of the day. Jo Konta has been on a tear to start the season, looking mighty impressive doing so. Especially with that easy win over Osaka. Over the last few months, Woz has started to look like the Woz of old again. She’s hitting through her backhand and running like no other. This match has two plus hours and three sets written all over it. I just think Konta will be able to find a way to hit through Woz, even though my Caro is one of my faves.
Zverev vs. Nadal
It’s a battle of the new guard vs. the old guard here. Can someone in the new guard please finally stand up and take out one of the stalwarts in a major? And not only that, can they back it up? I’m not so sure about that. But Zverev has looked real good lately. I just think these youngings don’t have the mental strength yet. PROVE ME WRONG! PLEASE! The ATP is desperate for some new blood.
Dmitrov vs. Gasquet and Thiem vs. Paire
All of these players are ridic shotmakers and full of personality. Plus add in 3 one-handed backhands…say what!? If I were at Melbourne, I’d try to sneak onto these courts to watch these beauts. Crazy thing…one of these four is likely a semi-finalist in this tournament. Who can make it happen?
Gavrilova vs. Bacsinszky
I don’t see the winner of this match getting any further (Pliskova is lurking). But this should be a dramatic and fun match. Both can hit all different kinds of shots, and I can see Timea frustrating Gavs in all sorts of ways. Should be a treat.
Sakkari vs. Lucic-Baroni
This matchup for a fourth round spot is just fun as fuck. We got introduced to Sakkari when she battled against Venus Williams last year. Glad to see her pushing forward and keeping it going. We got introduced to Lucic-Baroni a long ass time ago, but in career number two, she’s proven to be a big match player. Expecting Lucic-Baroni to blast her way to the second week, but big shout out to both ladies!
